EAS 29 Apr 1927 Formerly a captain in the first Lifeguards, he served in the White Nile campaign in 1900 and in South Africa in 1901-2. He was at one time private secretary to Winston Churchill and shortly after his marriage in 1905 began to take an active interest in politics. In 1906 he contested the Kingswinford Division of Staffordshire, and the Cockermouth Division of Cumberland and the Brigg Division of Lincoln in the following year. During the war he served in France from 1914 to 1916, being at one time ADC to Fieldmarshal Sir John French, and was mentioned in dispatches and from 1916 to 17 served in the East Africa Campaign. After the war he took a prominent part in politics, being Liberal MP for the Stroud Division of Gloucester in 1923-4 and Bristol North from 1924-9. In 1930 he joined the Conservative Party and from 1931 to the time of his death represented the Drake Division of Plymouth. Among the offices he held was Treasurer of His Majesty's Household 1912-15, Patronage Secretary to the Treasury 1917-21, Secretary of State for Air from 1921 to 1922. He was keenly interested in aviation and was one of the few men to become a skilled pilot after the age of 50. He was a staunch upholder of the rigid airship. He made many visits to East Africa where he had a property at Nanyuki for shooting and flying trips, being accompanied on some occasions by his twin sons and his daughter Diana. He was always ready to champion Kenya in the House of Commons and he concerned himself actively in Kenya politics.
