Mills - 'My parents, Eileen and Angus Lawrie, had sold their house and virtually lived at the Muthaiga Club for 3 years while they tried to decide where to go. My father always parked his car outside the ballroom and always wrote to me at the desk inside the ballroom on Sunday mornings. The only telephone for the bedroom was on a small table on the first landing where my mother was frequently seen in the mornings sitting on a chair in her pink negligee arranging her social life. In November 1963, on the morning the ballroom fell down, my father wasn't at the desk, his car wasn't outside and my mother was having breakfast in bed. Chege rushed up and got her out on to the lawn, still in her pink negligee, declaring that it must be an earthquake.
