General Information:

Kenya - A New Nation - D. Epstein & Co. Ltd. - This Company was founded by Mr David Epstein in 1913, when he set up business as a Manufacturers' Agent in Richard Geater's row of single storeyed shops, on the site of which now stands City House in Eliot Street, Nairobi. ....... Young "D" was later joined by his brother Ben, and when hostilities began in 1914 they both enlisted in the Forces and took part in the campaign against what was then known as GEA. David was later released from his duties to return to Nairobi to attend to urgent business matters. "SUMMIT" Cigarettes was one of the products handled by D. Epstein & Co. Ltd. and these retailed at Sh. 1/- for a tin of 50 and contained five Gift Coupons, which entitled smokers to a wonderful range of gifts from Box Cameras and Swiss Watches to Sewing Machines, Bicycles and Gramophones. Customs Duty was not as heavy as it is nowadays and hard earned money went much further, of course. The outbreak of WW2 completely stopped the sale of "SUMMIT" Cigarettes. ....... (more)

Ancestry Passenger list 1903 Mr S. Epstein, with Julia, David, Benj. and Hyman travel London-Cape Town
The Epsteins originated in Russia (see Ancestry Passenger list 1912 UK-Cape Town)
Murray Sinton: Have been doing a bit more research & found that Grandpa left UK bound for Cape Town on 21 Oct.1903 on a ship called Tokomaru with his mother & brothers Benjamin & Hyman, plus sister Julia, but no sign of their father. The Mr S Epstein shown in the ancestry passenger list is actually Mrs.
