Cranworth - WW1 - Cole's Scouts - Colin Isaacson was second in command to Berkeley Cole, and a better one it would have been hard to find, since he was the complete soldier in every sense of the word, and most certainly the only one of us for whom that claim could be advanced. He, too, had thrown up a military career in his early days and had come out to settle in the Colony. He farmed in partnership with Capt. Sandbach, who was killed in action in B. East in the very early days of the war, and with A.T. Miles. Unlike the rest of us, his heart was not really in farming but remained with his first love, soldiering ...... When Cole's Scouts were disbanded and the real advance into GEA under Gen. Smuts took place a year later, there was a very general call on Colin's services. He became Staff Officer to that lion-hearted fire-eater General O'Grady, received the MC early on and was killed leading an attack on a stockade and well in advance of his men ..…
