General Information:

Kenya Diary - Apr. 1904 - Muhoroni - received a wire from Mr Hobley at Kisumu telling me that the Nandi were giving trouble at an American mission station called Kaimosi, some distance north of Kisumu, that one of their American staff was missing and that he wanted me to move up there at once with my detachment ........ Late yesterday evening we heard that the American missionary, Dr. Wenthe, had been found dead, having been speared and badly cut about by the Nandi. A native policeman who had accompanied him had also been killed. .......... About a fortnight ago Dr. Wenthe arrived to join them. He introduced himself as an American Quaker and sponged on the mission for everything. The mission was getting rather tired of him, and hoped he was not going to stop much longer, when he was killed ..... (Mayes in fight with some Nandi - irresponsible) ..…[Wenthe went out to watch the fight and Nandi killed him]
Primarily I blame Mayes, and then I blame the indiscretion of the mission and thirdly the stupidity of Wenthe.
North - Arr. at the Friends Industrial Mission Kaimosi claiming to be American Quaker Feb/March 1904; d. 28/4/1904, became involved in native quarrel & killed by members of Kabware tribe near Kaimosi Mission, Nandi. 'An eccentric traveller' (FO 2)
Nandi - 1905 A Dutch settler named Van Breda and a missionary named Wendt at Kaimosi were murdered by the Nandi, the latter because some guards employed by the Mission had raided Nandi cattle.
