General Information:

1952 - Mau Mau - attacked while they were sitting with friends in their lounge at Kiambu. They were shot at by armed Africans.
Stoneham - Mau - Mr Bindloss was in his prime at 52, six feet tall, and of strong physique. To these advantages he probably owed his life. He and his wife were entertaining friends, Mr & Mrs Hobbs. It was a Sunday night, everything was normal, the servants were busy in the kitchen, the farm workers in their huts or paying visits to their friends. After dinner the party went into the lounge, where they sat talking. Intruders had evidently got into the house by some means and were lying doggo. Suddenly the door flew open and a man rushed in. Bindloss was sitting in a position where the opened door concealed him from the assassin, who fired point-blank with a revolver at his wife. A fortunate accident preserved Mrs Bindloss from death; the floor was of highly polished wood, strewn with rugs. A rug slid under the attacker's feet and his aim was upset, the bullet entering the wall three feet above the lady's head. A terrier puppy rushed to defend his mistress and Bindloss launched his considerable bulk at the native. The man fired again and hit Bindloss in the shoulder, shattering the collar bone. Despite his injury, Bindloss closed with the man and tried to overpower him. But a second assailant rushed in from another part of the house. He was armed with a panga and immediately began to strike at Bindloss, cutting him severely about the head and neck. Hobbs, stunned by the suddenness of the attack, had difficulty in intervening in the scrimmage, but he now tackled the second man, tearing off part of his clothing. The Mau Mau managed to wrest themselves clear and dash out of the house. Bindloss was badly hurt and needed instant attention. The assailants were not pursued.
