Henry J. Koren, Spiritan East African Memorial, 1994: Professed at Chevilly on October 28, 1904, he studied theology there and was ordained on April 30, 1905 in Paris. On October l0, 1905 he sailed for Eas tAfrica. Bp.Allgeyer placed him at St. Austin's, Nairobi, where he assisted in ine blessing of the new church of that fast-growing parish. ln l906 we find him in Kiambu, supervising the schools of that mission to the Kikuyu. Two years later he was back in Nairobi at St. Austin's, where he served also as director of its annex at Iruta. Just before World War One he became interim director of the Holy Family mission in the same city. After the war, he went to France on leave and was retained there for one year, which he spent at the new junior seminary of Angers. ln December l920, however, he could return to Kenya, where he took charge of the station in Kiambu. From 1923 on he functioned as director of the Holy Family mission in Nairobi. He did so well in that position that he continued tnere for two decades and could hand over a parish of some 2,000 Catholics to his successor. Transferred to France in the mid-1930s, he served as chaplain for another 25 years, first at the sanatorium of Bligny and then at the Vemeil-le-Chétif annex of the famous Auteuil complex of orphanages and trade schools.
