General Information:

Mischief - Already a celebrated figure in London society. He was an inspired buffoon - untidy, unshaven, and hilariously funny. Forever gambling, always broke, he had been sent to Kenya not by his father, his regiment or his trustees but by his wife. Men found him an exhausting joke. Women, with whom he was obsessed, found him 'a tremendous relief at weekends full of twits.' They remember, too, his vitality and his profound curiosity about them. He had been a gifted tennis player who had come from S. Africa with the Davis Cup team ....... Deeply unsure of himself, he longed for affection and praise from the rich and aristocratic, and went to embarrassing lengths to secure it. He was taken up and later married to Hilda Wardell, a lady of a certain age, and with plenty of money ..... after several years they divorced amicably and she sent Lezard to Kenya without a penny.
Temptress - Arrived in Kenya in 1940. Went to stay with Alice {de Janze} at Wanjohi Farm on Lord Erroll's instructions to conduct government surveillance work. Briefly Alice's main lover.
National Archives - Julien Joseph LEZARD - born 14.02.1902. Lezard (pseudonym: EGLISE) took part in Operation CATHEDRALE in August 1944. He was injured on landing and immobilised for seven weeks. The file contains a number of reports made on his return, recounting his experience and the treatment he received. Lezard's main comment was there was a serious lack of information relating to the conditions in Britain and he recommended that propaganda should be used to improve French sympathy and understanding.
Hut - SA Davis Cup Tennis, Happy Valley fame
Web - Dividend in bankruptcy in 1941 3d in the pound - Julien Joseph Lezard - declared bankrupt in 1938
Web - Oxford dnb - Happy Valley - At Clouds they played the 'sheet' game; a sheet would be strung across the drawing room, half a dozen men would poke their penises through strategically sited holes in the sheet, and the women on the other side would select their favourite appendage. A head start in the competition was enjoyed by Julien 'Lizzie' Lezard (1902-1958) a lover of both Idina Sackville and Alice de Janze who was so proud of his long member that he also liked to display it, along with his cards, when he got a full house at poker.
