Polnay - at the age of 24 John fell in love with a smart woman who could have been his mother, though she didn't look it. I was present in the hotel in Thomson's Falls when he proposed to her. It was a dance, and John, an enemy of dancing, stayed in the bar, and so did Rachel, the woman he loved. She sat on a barstool, an elegant, well-groomed creature; John's corduroy shorts were almost in rags. He called me over to witness the most important moment of his life. 'I just asked Rachel to marry me' he said. 'You're a silly child,' Rachel said. John argued, she laughed,  ......... she turned him down .......
