Tom Lawrence: 61 Squadron was based at RAF St. Eval, Cornwall (detached to Costal Command) from 14th Jul 1942 to 16th Nov 1943, and then RAF Skellingthorpe, Lincolnshire from 16th Nov 1943 to 1st Feb 1944 and 15th Apr 1944 to 16th Jun 1945. They went on an operation over Berlin on the night of 26th / 27th Nov 1943 from RAF Skellingthorpe, taking off at around 17:20hrs. This mission combined 442 aircraft. Most of the Lufwaffe thought the main target was Frankfurt and were diverted there. They intercepted the bomber stream at it passed with several losses to the allies. Over the target itself they were bothered very little by fighters, and the main threat was the intensive use of radar controlled flak guns, A total of 28 aircraft were lost with a further 14 crashing over England. Also there was a diversionary raid on Stuttgart. It was carried out by 157 Halifaxes and 21 Lancasters. 6 Halifaxes lost, 3.4 per cent of the force. The bombing was very scattered and caused little damage but part of the night-fighter force was drawn off from the Berlin operation.
