EAS - 26.2.1903 - Marriage - At the English Church Mombasa, on the 24th instant, by the Revd. F. Burt, assisted by the Revd. E.W. Crawford, Hugh Richard Phelips, Auditor of the East Africa Protectorate and Uganda Railway, eldest surviving son of Major-General R.H. Phelips, late Indian Staff Corps, of Knockwood, Shortlands, Kent, to Jacquette Edith Lambe, daughter of the late Revd. George Lambe of Highlands, Ivybridge, South Devon, and Mrs Lambe, 15 Kensington Mansions, Earls Court, London. ............. the certificate of their wedding is numbered 1 in the book under the new Marriage Ordinance, that is the first official marriage celebrated in the Anglican Church, ......... Both the parties are so well known that the wedding was bound to be popular.
Mr Phelips was appointed Local Auditor of the Gold Coast Protectorate in October 1894. He was invalided home, and in December 1896, was appointed Assistant Auditor of the EAP and Uganda Railway. In April 1897, he was appointed Local Auditor for the Uganda Protectorate, and transferred as Local Auditor for EAP and U. Ry. in December 1901. Mrs Phelips came to EA in October 1901 after having served as a volunteer nurse in South Africa during the war.
