DSO - Served in the European War from 1914; was mentioned in Despatches in 1914, and twice in 1915, for services in France; in 1916 (General Milne's Despatches), for services in Salonika, and again in Dec 1917. He was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (London Gazette, 1/1/15) - "Alexander George Arbuthnot, Major, 24th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. For very valuable work on several occasions between 19 oct. and 23 Nov. in observing the fire of our batteries and furnishing valuable reports, though under very heavy shell fire from the enemy's guns, during the first battle of Ypres-Armentieres." He commanded the 24th Battery RFA in France Sept 1914 to Sept. 1915, and subsequently the 99th Brigade, RFA in France and Salonika. He became Lieut.-Colonel 3 March 1916, and was created a CMG in Jan 1917, and awarded the Serbian Order of Karageorge with Swords. He later commanded a group of artillery in the 14th Corps during the third battle of Ypres in the autumn of 1917, and was severely wounded on 29 Nov 1917
