General Information:

Hobley - 1892/3 - led expedition against the Ketosh tribe with Capt. Sitwell and Hobley. .....  one of those rare beings gifted with an uncanny influence over natives. Most successful District Commissioners have it to a considerable extent, but two men - William Grant of Busoga, and H.B. Partington - possessed this gift in greater degree than any others I have known. Both have now, alas! passed away, so one can freely discuss their characters. ......... Grant was a self made man, who came out from Scotland and took to African life as a fish takes to water. A man of few words, very reserved, even to his closest friends, his native interests absorbed him, and his power over those with whom he came in contact was immense. He never raised his voice, he gave orders almost in a whisper, and the recipient would immediately rush off to carry them out.
Lorimer - 1916? - PC at Toro - a brother of Grant the explorer [?too young]- Mr Grant is most kind and thoughtful ....... he has spent about 13 years out here, in expeditions and hunting
Tucker - 1897 - a band of rebels was met and defeated by Mr Grant and Lieut. Hobart
Matson - IBEA officer at Luba's in 1895 .......... arrived in Uganda with Lugard in Dec. 1890; during his Company and Government service he gained experience and showed considerable competence in operations against tribal adversaries.
EAHB 1905 - IBEA Co. General Africa Staff - appointed 10th May 1890. taken over by the Uganda Protectorate, April 1st 1893; Collector, Aug. 31st 1894; Sub-Commissioner, July 29th 1899.

Mombasa 6/8/1890 & arr. Kampala 16/12/1890; dep Kampala for Bunyoro 8/4/1891 with Lugard's march to west, returned to Kampala 31/12/1891; wife arr.
