At one time Clerk to Legislative Council, he lived in retirement in Dorset. Served with the Cape Mounted Rifles in the Boer War from 1897-1901 and was severely wounded at the siege of Wepener. During WW1 he served with the Military Labour Corps and was twice Mentioned in Despatches.

Playne - Mr Gray, who was severely wounded at the siege of Wepener, was born at Worthing, Sussex, on October 21, 1880, and educated at Bedford. He arrived in EA on May 27, 1908, as Clerk to the Legislative and Executive Councils. Previously he was for three and a half years in the Cape Mounted Rifles. He holds the South African War medal, and 3 clasps. He is Hon. Treasurer to the Nairobi Golf Club.
