Tanganyika Notes & Records - No. 42, p. 29 - The Ven. J.E. Hamshere was the father of the present Headmaster of Arusha School. He came out as a CMS Missionary in 1893 and spent much of his time at the Divinity School, Freretown (Kisauni). He was an expert on the Mombasa dialect of Kiswahili, and did considerable translation work. He did much safari work, and walked from Mombasa to Taveta and the Pare Mountains. After holding the appointment of Archdeacon of Mombasa for a number of years, he was transferred to Kongwa in 1926 to open the Clergy Training College there. He retired from CMS in 1930, and after being Vicar of Mark Cross, near Tunbridge Wells until 1948, he retired from his parish and died in Devon in 1952 at the age of 85.
