He had gone bust in Kericho in 1922 as a member of the British East Africa Disabled Officers Colony (BEADOC) where they had bought several thousand acres of forest land in 1919 and cleared it and planted flax, but the price collapsed, and they sold out to a certain Oliver Brooke, who knew something that they didn't! His company became famous as Brooke Bond Tea - there never was a Mr Bond - and the rest is history.
