Bobs Harries - History of Thika - My family were farming in South Africa and my father, Alan Charles Harries, heard of the free grant of land from a man called Russel Barriker [sic], who then owned Mt. Margaret Estate, in the Rift where he is buried. Father arrived in British East Africa in April 1904 together with my brother Cecil and a relation Lois Bromage. He contacted the land officer who showed him the area in which free grants could be obtained, in certain areas the grant was limited to 600 acres but in all other areas the grant was 5,000. As none of the areas had been surveyed the prospective farmer had to inspect the area he wanted and if no Africans were living on it he had to put one peg in the land. Later a Government Surveyor would be sent out and the guarantee had to intimate in which direction from the peg he wished to have his 5000 acres. For the survey the fee was £28.
